Kick 3

Date: 2024

Kick 3 is an award winning drum synthesizer plugin that lets users sculpt, shape and create custom kick drums effortlessly. Its import and analyze feature extracts click and sub elements from any sample for resynthesis, bridging sample based and synthesis workflows. For Kick 3 I designed an intuitive interface with clear parameter controls, streamlined workflows and real-time visual feedback to help producers get great results faster.

Concept sketches and inital ideas

I started by roughing out the core interface on paper, using simple pencil sketches and wireframes to map out feature placement and navigation flow. These early drawings focused solely on structure and usability, laying the groundwork for more detailed explorations.

Explorations

I turned the wireframes into digital mockups, creating dozens of screen variations to explore different layouts and feature arrangements. I reviewed each iteration with stakeholders and developers, refining the design through multiple rounds of collaborative feedback.

Detailed interface previews

With the layout finalized, I produced high-fidelity mockups covering every plugin view—from the main synthesis panel to the sample import and effects pages. Each screen was crafted to maintain visual consistency while ensuring clear access to key controls. Managing over a dozen distinct layouts highlighted the scope of the interface and the importance of a unified design language. These mockups demonstrate the balance between detailed functionality and an organized, user-friendly workflow.

By examining the journey from pencil sketches to polished mockups, the iterative process reveals how complex audio interfaces gain clarity and cohesion. This approach integrates versatility, detailed craftsmanship, and strategic problem solving at every stage. To explore how this method could benefit your next project, please reach out.
